Foray into the Caribbean
Day 10:
After leaving Funchal, we were at sea 5 full days and finally arrived at Bridgetown, Barbados this morning. This is a new country for both of us. We walked along the shore and ended up at the George Washington House.
As a young man, George Washington spent a year in Barbados before his military and presidential career. Experts say Washington’s time in Barbados were formative and shaped him into the leader he became. After a long walk back to the ship, a huge rainstorm snuck up on us but we made it back before getting soaked. Tonight we head towards Kingston, St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Day 11:
Our stop today was Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This is another new country for us both. The day started with a rainbow which is always a good sign! After that, we visited an Anglican cathedral (St George) which has a stained glass window that was originally designed for St Paul’s cathedral in London. We then went to St Mary’s Church of the Assumption. A nice long hike after that took us to the Botanical Gardens! This is the oldest botanical garden in the western hemisphere dating back to 1765. Our next stop is St George’s Grenada. The weather is a bit humid but we are having a super time!
Day 13:
Once again, we are off to sea. Jan explains what he loves to do on sea days.
Day 12:
Another beautiful day and another country to add to our list! Grenada is a beautiful island nation in the southern Caribbean just north of South America. We had another super day and hired a cab. They took us all around the island including to the Annandale Waterfall and a national park. Grenada is also called the “Island of Spice” because it is the second largest producer of nutmeg in the world second only to Indonesia.
